"Interior and Exterior of Gender"

Print screen, photographic paper, vinyl sticker

For my final piece in my BA, I created 'Interior and Exterior of Gender' which explores Judith Butler's theories.

“Originally intended to dispute the biology-is-destiny formulation, the distinction between sex and gender serves the argument that whatever biological intractability sex appears to have, gender is culturally constructed: hence, gender is neither the causal result of sex nor as seemingly fixed as sex” (Butler, 1990, 8). This describes gender as a cultural concept and how its created through experiences, rather than our biological sex.

In this piece, I demonstrate the two sides of gender. The outside of the window contains a full figured body with my 'masculine' appearance, this is my exterior of gender and is only my appearance which I can shapeshift.  The material is permanent and stuck on the wall as if it won't shift from how the audience perceives me.
The inside is my transition, one print screen is pink to suggest girl, whereas the teen is blue to suggest boy, these are both my experiences so, therefore, my interior of gender.

There's a triangle in the middle to connect my experiences together to show that my gender isn't determined by my body i.e my vagina.
